The Skinny On Fat

If you still believe avoiding fat like the Plague is going to get you to reach your fitness goals, you may want to read further. For many years, people thought eating fat calories is what makes you gain body fat. Current research has enlightened us and we're finding out gaining body fat has more to do with an overabundance of calories, high insulin levels and screwy hormones than it does with the consumption of fat. Below are some reasons why fat is an essential component to all diets.

  • Fat is the body's preferred source of energy in times of caloric deficit or survival.
  • Fat is the body's main source of energy during prolonged physical activity via the aerobic energy system.
  • Hair, nail and skin growth rely heavily on the presence of fat in your diet.
  • Fat is needed to transport essential vitamins and fatty acids throughout the body.
  • Fat gives you a high energy yield in less portions providing 9 calories of energy for every 1 gram.
  • Consuming fat can add to feelings of satiety which can prevent over eating.
  • Fat is crucial in building important hormones in the body.
  • Dietary fat should range between 20-30% of your daily caloric intake.
  • Good sources of fat include: avocados, almonds, cashews, pistachios, peanuts, almond butter, peanut butter, fish oils and flax seed.

So when you are reading the Nutritional Facts on the product, what is the difference between 'Total Fat' 'Saturated Fat' and 'Trans Fat'?
